In the past years Georgia has attended many Crossfit classes, but her workouts were always at her level. If not they were tailored to her age and capabilities. However, now that she has began to compete, this will not always be the case. She now needs to be prepared for any work out, and to do that we have decided to allow her to progress her training. In Crossfit, this largely means learning the Olympic lifts.
Georgia has already been conducting power lifts for more then a year. Power lifts refer to dead lifts, squats, and the bench press. All of these are great exercises, and a step into Olympic lifting but none of this exercises have the difficulty that the Clean and Jerk and Snatch posses.
So, to improve her abilities we have enrolled her into an Olympic lifting classes. Or rather, we bought her a punch card for a local USAW certified gym. This way Georgia can take classes, when it fits into her schedule, and begin to progress her skills.
When picking a gym, the first thing I looked for was a gym that was USAW certified. USAW is the United Stated of America Weightlifting association, and they are the governing body for Olympic weightlifters in America. Next I called the gym and spoke with their head lifting coach and set Georgia up to take a trial class. This was so we could make sure the coach was comfortable working with her, and Georgia was comfortable in the class.
Georgia’s fist class went very well, and she really liked the coach. With gymnastics and traveling for the holiday season, she hasn’t been able to return for a second, class, but that has been the great benefit with having a punch card. It is good when ever she has the time, and we don’t waste any monthly fees!
