FEATURED SLED PUP:
This Florida born, Texas raised, girl is just 9 years old and already heavily involved in both dance and Gymnastics. She is also an honor roll student, and her mother says “once you meet her it is hard not to love her.
Genny has been active since she could walk. Her mother introduced her to tumbling and dance, through mommy and me classes, at the age of 1 because she had already began doing forward rolls. However, it hasn’t always been an easy path. At a young age, Genny was hospitalized and her family discovered she had asthma. The Doctors said she would be limited in what she could do, but it has never let it stop her. With a team of specialist and her mother at her side, she has controlled her asthma.
Currently Genny conditions 6 days a week, in addition to her dance classes and gymnastics training. She is a member of the Wolverines dance team, recently placed 2nd in duo dance and in 1st in a national trio dance competition with her team. Last Christmas Genny danced with San Antonio’s Ballet’s “The nutcracker”.
She said her favorite kind of dance is tap and her favorite event is the uneven bars in gymnastics. Her goal at every meet is to make it into the top ten, and several times she has walked away with the gold medal on bars, beam, and floor.
Name: Genesis McMullin
Erin : How many competitions have you done and what did you place in these events?
Genny: I have done so many it is hard to keep track. In dance, I’ve come in first place with my trio group and second place with my duo dance at the nationals. At gymnastics I have come in 1st place a few times on bars, beam and floor. For vault my highest was second place, but I try and make it to the top 10 at least in every event. That’s my goal. My favorite competition was when I was bars champion in Corpus Christi, TX.
Erin : When did you start dancing?
Genny: When I was 1.
Erin : When is your next dance competition?
Genny: I’m taking a break from dance for 6 months, to train with my new coach in gymnastics. So, I will start practicing for a dance audition in June. I am going to dance for a new company that starts competing in August.
Erin : Do you like competing?
Genny: Yes, more than anything.
Erin : What do you like the most, dancing or gymnastics?
Genny: Gymnastics is more serious but dance is more fun. I feel free when I’m dancing. I love both, but dance is my favorite.
Erin : Do you feel like gymnastics and dancing go hand in hand?
Genny: Yes, you need gymnastics skills for the harder parts in dance and it helps to get the judges attention….and with dance especially. Ballet can help with balance and form that you need for your gymnastics routines.
